Companion CD-ROM: xilinx directory

The xilinx directory contains the Xilinx FPGA Tools that you will be using to design and implement Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) designs for the DSLMU Microcontroller Board. These tools consist of two software packages: the Xilinx ISE WebPack, which allows you to design and implement FPGA designs using schematic diagrams, Verilog and/or VHDL code, and ModelSim XE (Xilinx Edition), which allows you to simulate your design in software.

In order to use the Xilinx FPGA Tools, you will need to install both the Xilinx ISE WebPack and ModelSim XE software. Note that you may not need these tools in your laboratory experiments, in which case you will not need to install them. Please consult the notes for your UNSW course for more details.

Be warned that the tools in this directory are rather large, requiring at least 680 MB of free disk space. Furthermore, these tools only run under Microsoft Windows, although it may be possible to run them under an emulator or a virtual machine under Linux. More details are provided in the Xilinx ISE WebPack and ModelSim XE installation instructions.

Licensing

Please note that you must read and accept Xilinx’s licence agreement before you can run Xilinx ISE WebPack, and Model Technology Incorporated’s licence agreement before you can run ModelSim XE. Running ModelSim XE also requires you to register with Xilinx and receive a licence key to unlock the software.

You can download the latest versions of Xilinx ISE WebPack and ModelSim XE from Xilinx’s Web site. You will need to register with Xilinx before you can download these programs.
