The Long Paddock is a historic series of tracks and trails that linked the stock breeding areas of New South Wales and Queensland with the emerging markets in Victoria. The modern Cobb Highway traverses the New South Wales portion of The Long Paddock, from Wilcannia in the north to Moama in the south.

On this trip, I explored the section of The Long Paddock between Mossgiel (233 km south of Wilcannia) to Mathoura (40 km north of Moama). The northern section is definitely big sky country, with wide open plains that only have trees along the banks of the few streams. Further south, the flat plains are dominated by river gums, especially in the picturesque Murray Valley National Park. Keep an eye out for the information signs along the way which provide an insight into this harsh but beautiful country, as well as the Long Paddock sculptures.
