JACOBS E.P.

+ The Adventures of Blake and Mortimer

Professor Philip Mortimer (nuclear physicist) and Captain Francis Blake (dashing head of MI5), are the legendary heroes of Edgar Pierre Jacobs' series of comic books. Jacobs, like Jules Verne, appreciated the astonishing that could be found in scientific invention; his heroes, very much ahead of their time, discover extraordinary objects and phenomena through their uncommon adventures.

The books are a mix of adventure and science fiction, drawn in the clear line style that will be familiar to readers of Tintin. Jacobs actually collaborated with Herge on several Tintin books, most notably the books, "The Seven Crystal Balls" and the "Prisoners of the Sun".

20 titles have been released in the series. 13 of these have been translated into English.

TREASE Geoffrey

+ Geoffrey Trease

Geoffrey Trease is best known for his engaging children's historical novels. His exciting plots, male and female lead characters and meticulous research of historical details make reading his novels a real pleasure.

Some of my favourites include Cue for Treason (1940), Bows Against the Barons (1934) and the Mandeville series (1980 - 1984).

WHITE Paul

+ Jungle Doctor

Born in 1910 Bowral, NSW, Australia, Paul White had Africa in his blood for as long as he could remember. His father captured his imagination with stories of his experiences in the Boer War which left an indelible impression. His father died of meningitis in an army camp in 1915, and he was left an only child without his father at five years of age. He inherited his father's storytelling gift along with a mischievous sense of humour.

He committed his life to Christ as a 16 year old school boy and studied medicine as gthe next step towards missionary work in Africa. Paul and his wife, Mary, left Sydney with their small son, David, for Tanganyika in 1938. He always thought of this as his life's work but Mary's severe illness forced their return to Sydney in 1941. Their daughter, Rosemary was born while they were overseas.

Within weeks of his return, Paul White was invited to begin a weekly radio broadcast which spread throughout Australia as the Jungle Doctor Broadcasts. The weekly manuscripts for these programmes became the raw material for the Jungle Doctor Hospital stories - a series of 20 books.
